Europa League review - Thurs 21st Oct
Liverpool and Manchester City both gained good results in the Europa League. The Reds drew 0-0 away to Napoli while Emmanuel Adebayor scored a hat-trick as Manchester City beat Polish side Lech Poznan 3-1 at Eastlands.;grp=[group]][img(300,250)]http://adserver.adtech.de/adserv|3.0|327|2816969|0|170|ADTECH;loc=300;grp=[group][/img]
Amid rumours linking City with unsettled Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, Adebayor handed manager Roberto Mancini a timely reminder of his finishing prowess with a clinical display.Mancini made six changes. David Silva and Shaun Wright-Phillips came into the side with Carlos Tevez and James Milner dropping to the bench, while Patrick Vieira replaced Gareth Barry in central midfield.Micah Richards, Dedryck Boyata and Pablo Zabaleta were named in the City defence in place of Vincent Kompany, Wayne Bridge and Jerome Boateng.City took the lead in the 13th minute when Patrick Vieira laid the ball off to Adebayor, who turned his marker and passed the ball beyond Poznan goalkeeper Jasmin Buric and into the net to register his first goal of the campaign. The Togolese striker got his second in the 25th minute rising unmarked in the Poznan box to head home Silva's cross. After coming under virtually zero pressure in the opening period, City promptly conceded just four minutes after the break. The ball rolled kindly for Marcin Kikut, whose off-target shot fell perfectly for Joel Tshibamba. The striker wasted little time in firing past Joe Hart. But Adebayor made sure of victory completing his hat-trick when he tapped home David Silva's brilliant cross 17 minutes from time.Liverpool draw
Earlier, a much-changed Liverpool side secured an impressive goalless draw away to Napoli in Group K of the Europa League.Reds manager Roy Hodgson rested striker Fernando Torres and skipper Steven Gerrard so Jonjo Shelvey was given his first start for Liverpool. The 18-year-old, signed from Charlton Athletic last May, was given the advanced midfield role usually occupied by Gerrard.Despite making seven changes from Sunday's Merseyside derby defeat, Liverpool produced a calm and controlled performance in a hostile Stadio San Paolo.Liverpool almost went behind in the final minute of the first half when Cristian Maggio's corner fell to Edinson Cavani who beat Jamie Carragher and fired in a low cross which Marek Hamsik diverted goalwards. It was unclear whether Hamsik's shot had crossed the line before Paul Konchesky cleared. Play was waved on with even television replays inconclusive.Cavani, scorer of six goals in seven Serie A matches, should have done better when Walter Gargano played a short ball into him just inside the area but, under pressure from Konchesky, he could only shoot weakly at Pepe Reina early in the second half. The Merseysiders almost took the lead 20 minutes from time when Milan Jovanovic nicked the ball on the right, cut inside diagonally and played a cute through-ball for Ryan Babel in space through the inside left channel. However the Dutch winger's first-time shot was well stopped by the keeper. Napoli piled on the pressure towards the end but Liverpool held firm.
